A Brief History of Cuckoo Clocks
By Kristy Annely
The history of the cuckoo clock can be traced to the Black Forest of Germany. It was the abundance of both time and wood that gave the inhabitants there the idea of creating clocks.
The first cuckoo clocks, though, rather primitive but were a better choice than the sundials and hourglasses used in that time. The first parts were the wooden toothed wheels and stones were the weights of the cuckoo clock. The wood Waag was used as a pendulum that ran back and forth on the top of the dial to keep the clock in time. While running down the history of the cuckoo clock, it must be said that the inhabitants became artisans in their individual fields. Some became expert clock makers, and others became expert wood carvers. Others became clock painters, and a few made the toothed wheels and chains of the cuckoo clock.
The cuckoo clock was originally a Dutch clock that was reinvented with a sound of nature, the cuckoo's call. It was Frank Ketterer who outlined the system of a clock imitating the whistles and billows of the cuckoos. Repeated refinements on this original design have produced the famous cuckoo clock of today.
It has always been thought that the history of the cuckoo clock originated from Switzerland. However, since 1738 the production of cuckoo clocks remained centralized in the Black Forest of Germany. The reason for this misconception is due to the fact that there are other versions of the cuckoo clocks coming from neighboring regions.
Most of the cuckoo clocks are of the conventional design of a bird popping from the openings and with rustic designs all over. There are occasional nature design cuckoo clocks with designs of animals and leaves. These clocks are best hung on walls.
